BritBox Adds 400,000 Subscribers Since February, Lands BBC Series ‘Blue Lights’

BritBox is one of the top platforms for streaming British television available, and this week it announced it had grown to over 3.4 million global users.

How Many New Users Does BritBox Have?
The subscriber update from BritBox means that the service has added 400,000 new customers since the last time it provided an update in February. In addition to library shows like classic “Doctor Who” episodes, the streamer is home to a wide variety of originals and co-productions, including “Stonehouse,” “Sherwood,” “Beyond Paradise” and many more.
The streamer is adding a new series to its lineup, as well. “Blue Lights,” a comedy-drama centering on PSNI probationary recruits in Belfast will be available to stream on BritBox in both the United States and Canada. The series follows characters navigating their way through their first few months in a uniquely dangerous place to be a response police officer.
What Were BritBox’s Top News Stories of the Year?
The top story for BritBox in 2023 so far has been its price hike. The streamer raised subscription prices in August, climbing from $7.99 per month to $8.99 or $79.99 per year to $89.99. BritBox is not alone in feeling market pressures this year; most of the top streaming platforms from Max to Disney+ to Peacock have raised prices at some point this year, as streaming services industry-wide attempt to boost their average revenue-per-user (ARPU) metric.
There’s been one undoubtedly bad news story for BritBox in 2023, as well. The service is currently being sued by DISH, which claims BritBox is improperly using adaptive bitrate (ABR) technology without a licensing agreement in place. DISH has successfully sued other companies for using its ABR tech, so BritBox may have to shell out some cash when the proceedings are all said and done.
In better news, BritBox was able to boost its potential distribution by 20 million homes thanks to its new deal with Comcast. In June, BritBox and Comcast agreed to a deal that would see the BritBox app become available on Xfinity TV platforms including X1, Xfinity Flex, and Xumo TV.
