Everything We Know About the Future of Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Yellowstone’ Franchise

There’s actual news to report in the case of the new sequel to the most popular show on television, Taylor Sheridan’s contemporary Western drama “Yellowstone.” Unlike prequels “1883” and “1923,” this new show — now working under the title “The Madison” — will be set in the modern day. The show will be available on linear TV and streaming, and Michelle Pfeiffer has been brought on board to star. On Tuesday, new cast members for the show were announced, and we’ll break down everything we know about the show and the future of the entire “Yellowstone” franchise!

Key Details:

  • “The Madison” will air on Paramount Network and stream on Paramount+.
  • Patrick J. Adams of “Suits” was announced as a new cast member on Tuesday.
  • Multiple “Yellowstone” spinoffs could be in the works apart from “The Madison.

What

When Will Season 5 of ‘Yellowstone’ Return?

Frustrated fans only have a few more months of waiting before "Yellowstone" comes back to airwaves.

Fans of “Yellowstone” have been in limbo ever since Jan. 1, 2023, when the last episode of Season 5, Part 1 aired on theParamount Network. Since then, behind-the-scenes drama between Sheridan and the show’s star Kevin Costner has spilled into the public view, with each blaming the other for delays and production misfires.

Production finally restarted on the series in May, and in June it was confirmed that the second half of Season 5 would begin airing on Nov. 10, 2024. This will be the final batch of episodes for the show, and Costner has confirmed he’s not coming back, telling The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted the “drama” to end.

So, for fans of the flagship series in the franchise, there are six more episodes remaining, but that is far from the end of the ongoing story of the Dutton Family.

What Is the Status of the Modern-Day ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoffs?

Matthew McConaughey has long been rumored to be joining the "Yellowstone" franchise, but nothing has been confirmed.

Sheridan is reportedly at work on not one, but two modern-day “Yellowstone” spinoffs. The one we have the most information on is “The Madison,” which formerly received the working title “2024.” Previous reports indicated that the show would launch in December, but with casting still occurring, that timeline will almost certainly have to shift into at least 2025, however, with Sheridan, you can never be quite sure.

Michelle Pfeiffer is now officially attached to star in “The Madison,” which shifts the scene from Wyoming to Montana and follows a New York family set against the backdrop of the Western wilderness. On Tuesday, “Suits” star Patrick J. Adams was officially added to the cast, along with Elle Chapman, Beau Garrett, and Amiah Miller. Kurt Russel has also been mentioned in connection with the show, though no official casting news on his involvement has been handed down yet.

Matthew McConaughey has been rumored to be attached to the show that turned into “The Madison” since spring of 2023, but it now appears he’s no longer involved.

There’s a second “Yellowstone” spinoff in the works as well. The show is titled currently working under the name “6666,” and will shift the scene from Wyoming to Texas and the Four Sixes Ranch. The show could focus on “Yellowstone” character Jimmy Hurdstrom, who was written off that show in Season 4, but returned for one episode of Season 5, in a possible tease that he could return in “6666.”

There’s been few updates on this show since it was announced, so it’s hard to say when it will actually premiere. But, considering that Sheridan led the group that bought the ranch in 2021 — and he now lives there — it would stand to reason that a show set on the ranch will happen eventually.

Where Can You Stream All of the Shows in the ‘Yellowstone’ Franchise?

Paramount+ is the streaming home for every show in the "Yellowstone" universe, except for "Yellowstone" itself.

Much of Taylor Sheridan’s work is available on Paramount+, including shows set in the “Yellowstone” universe such as “1883” and “1923.” The streamer will also host episodes of “The Madison” and “6666” when they eventually premiere, though first those episodes are likely to air on the linear Paramount Network.

Paramount+ is also home to “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” which was originally conceived as a spin-off of “1883,” but as of its premiere last November, officially does not share a universe with the Duttons of “Yellowstone.”

Despite Paramount being Sheridan’s creative home, Paramount+ is not the streaming home for “Yellowstone” thanks to a licensing deal that Paramount executives have identified as a clear misstep. Before Paramount launched Paramount+’s predecessor CBS All Access in 2021, it licensed the streaming rights to “Yellowstone” to NBCUniversal for placement on its streamer Peacock. However, the show still resides there today, and the end of “Yellowstone” also means the end of a costly mistake for Paramount.
